Innovative Inspiration | Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb

There are plenty of things that can be beautiful inspiration for your wedding, thus I have decided to begin a series of blog posts to exemplify that. For the first instalment of “Innovative Inspiration,” I have decided to use the Viktor Rolf Flowerbomb scent. A delicate pink hue and wrapped in an architectural bottle with a silver nameplate and black flower accent, this perfume is a fragrant and floral hyper-feminine scent. Victor and Rolf FlowerbombVenue | In my mind, there are two venue options for this wedding: (1) based on the fragrance’s name, a gorgeous outdoor scene, which could easily paint the picture of effortless romance through nature’s beauty and calculated planning (2) inspired by the angularity of the perfume’s bottle, a trendy, geometric indoor location adorned with black modern furniture and dripping with pink flowers would perfectly embody the essence of Flowerbomb without being cliché.Mywedding.comFloral | With a name like Flowerbomb, this realm of wedding planning is understandably important. As with all weddings, the floral selection is dependent on the date of the wedding. So, for the purposes of this blog, we’ll say that this is a spring wedding. The floral scheme that I envision for this wedding includes pinks, whites and blacks and because of Flowerbomb’s name, I’d like to include as many different seasonal flowers as possible in eclectic arrangement.

FlowersThe first flowers that pop into my head are anemones and sweet peas, but I also see a place for other flowers such as cherry blossoms, cosmos, dahlias and poppies. Though the pinks and whites are easy to account for, the black color is more difficult, but it is found in the anemone flower and can be easily incorporated through vases and wrappings—such as in the bridal bouquets!

Table Settings | In my mind, there are two options for table settings, dependent on the venue. For an outdoor venue, I think that simple ivory linens and tableware would allow the flowers to be the focal point of the décor. Equipped with pink napkins, silver chairs and tall centerpieces, this scene would blow your guests away! 

For an indoor reception, I would go linen-less with black furniture. This would perfectly make a modern and chic statement for your wedding, while the black furnishings would allow for something bold to be done with the head table- up to you! With the exception of short centerpieces, I wouldn’t change a thing from the outdoor table settings- simple elegance is key when using Flowerbomb as wedding inspiration.

Though I can’t discuss every aspect of weddings in this post, I have pinned much more to the Pinterest page. This is just one idea for extracting inspiration for your wedding from everyday objects. Giovanni's Open House ~ Rockford, Illinois

Vendor Blog Series.....Questions and Answers from a DJ and Lighting Expert

The third part of our Vendor Blog Series are questions that we asked a DJ and Lighting expert.  Luxe Productions, located in Rockford, Illinois has been providing entertainment and uplighting for Chicago, Rockford, Quad Cities and surrounding areas for five years. As a wedding planner I can attest to the importance of finding a professional company to build a rapport with to meet your needs.  Jordan Chance and his staff have been a tremendous resource to myself and my clients and today I would like to share with you some of that knowledge.

What makes you different from your competition? 

Our approach is what sets us apart.  We have committed a full time staff to just focusing on your event.  On our staff we have trained professionals that specialize in each of our areas.  Those lead people seek out seminars, trainings, and information to make sure they stay on top both with technology but also concept and design.  This is what we do full time so we are able to spend the time and resources to create the best events and experiences.

Do I always get the person that I sign the contract with or meet at my consultation? 

Yes!  We believe that it is important to build a rapport with our clients.  You are welcome to meet with your DJ before signing the contract in order to ensure a good match.  We have DJ’s with a variety of personalities and styles to fit every event. You will know who your DJ is when you sign the contract and can communicate with them as much or little as you would like.

How would you define your style? 

The best way to describe our style is very professional.  We don’t have a specific way that we always do our weddings because that would not lend to the creativity or desires of our clients.  Instead, we have the tools and flexibility to listen and incorporate our clients’ wishes into their event.  The music, lighting, and timeline can always be changed up and we facilitate those changes so our client gets exactly what they want.

What will you wear to a wedding or event?

We feel that our attire speaks to our professionalism.  We wear suits and ties to weddings.  For other events, we dress according to what will be expected of the attendees.  If we are unsure, we always look to the event planners to give us direction.

How do we pick songs that we want played?  Do you have a do not play list?  Can guests request songs? 

All of the song choices for both the special dances and the open dance can be picked through our online planning forms.  Upon booking, each couple is given a username and password so they can begin working on their song lists and timeline at their convenience. The online planning tool allows you to search a vast database of music and sort your selections into “Must Play,” “Play If Possible,” and “Do Not Play” lists.  If there happens to be something the couple would like played that is not included in the database, they can just let us know and we would be happy to get it for them.

Do you have backup equipment with you on that day?

We have carefully thought through the possible gear failures that could happen during an event and we carry an emergency bag of equipment to every event.  In addition to that we also have extra equipment that we keep in our  warehouse just in case and we always have someone on call who can run equipment out to events.

What ways do you keep up to date professionally with your business? 

Staying ahead of the trends, gear, and ideas is something that we love about this job.  We take the time to travel to the best national conferences to learn from the leading industry experts.  Also, with social media, forums, websites, and magazines we can gather ideas and inspiration that keeps us fresh!

Why would I include lighting at my reception? Is it just another expense? 

Lighting is one of the most important elements that you can add to your event.   Sometimes it helps to think of it as part of the décor of your reception.  It can set the mood in the room: romantic, elegant, festive, or fun.  Another important consideration is the effect it has on your photographs.  Lighting helps makes those photos come alive and exhibit the elegant or fun atmosphere.

How can lighting add the personalization I am looking for? 

The reason we love lighting so much is because it is so versatile.  With specific color and fixture choices we can create an intimate romantic setting that feels warm and elegant or we can create an upbeat, dance club atmosphere.  With our ‘Name in Lights’ we can project a monogram to truly customize your event.

Will someone be onsite for the reception to monitor the lighting?

All of our DJ’s are trained on lighting and can monitor it throughout the evening.  Some of our packages include a lighting technician who can program the lights and provide more of a light show.

Vendor Blog Series.....Questions and Answers From a Wedding Photographer

Part 2 of our vendor blog series includes questions that we asked Robyn Aaron from Robyn Photography.  I met Robyn last year at a seminar for wedding professionals and fell in LOVE with her work.  She is a wonderful peer to have in the industry to bounce ideas off of when needing assistance.  She and I worked together on a photo shoot last summer which took place on the beach along Lake Michigan.  It was there that I really noticed the passion and energy  that she has for her talent.  So, I hope we asked the questions that you would want to ask a wedding photographer. How would you describe your photography style?

Modern, but timeless. It’s always my goal to get to know a couple and help showcase the moments of their day in a natural way – in a way that feels like them.  Of all the times you should look happy, relaxed, and lovely in photos; it’s your wedding day!

How would you describe your working style?

I love making sure my couples have a great wedding photography experience! So, as far as photographers go, I’m probably a little more hands-on than most.  By that, I mean that we’re always glad to be a resource to the couple throughout the planning process.  We love working with the couple, as well as the planner or coordinator, to ensure that their moments are captured in a natural, relaxed way.  In addition, I’m always glad to make recommendations of other really great vendors with whom I’ve worked.  In fact, I have an entire back end of my website dedicated to my couples with tips for their wedding plans, as well as a preferred vendor list.  When all is said and done, my working style is one that is rooted in an attention to detail, a love of what I do, and a care for this couple who has begun an incredible journey together!

What do you think distinguishes your work from other photographers?

Every photographer brings their own unique style and knowledge to a situation – so, that’s such a great question, but it’s so hard not to sound cliché! What distinguishes me from other photographers is… well, me! I’m careful and conscientious of my craft by always continuing my education.  There are so many photographers out there, that this experience and knowledge most certainly sets me apart.  Because I only photograph weddings and engagements and have a great deal of experience with both – I bring an intuitiveness to each lighting situation and couple, and I’m very good at tackling wedding day hiccups or updates in schedules with ease and professionalism.  Plus, we just have SO much fun! Professional doesn’t always have to mean completely serious, but I do believe in a great deal of balance and a great deal of smiling on a wedding day.  Many brides tell me that I’ve been a calming force in their otherwise hectic day and they appreciated me for that.  That is always such an incredible compliment! I’ve worked very hard to make my business feel like an extension of my whole self and reflect my crazy ideals of high quality.  I split my time between the Chicago area and eastern Iowa, but love to travel for weddings.  I enjoy fashion mags, cozy things (read: sweatpants!), the crackle of leaves under my feet in the fall, the smell of lavender, beautiful rustic elements, and Essie Chinchilly nail polish. I enjoy the juxtaposition of my modern, high-end Chicago weddings to my backyard Iowa weddings and everything in-between, and – most importantly – I just adore that I get to photograph love.

How can I make sure that I look good in my photos?

Smile! Have fun! Your smile and that giggle you make when he whispers something silly in your ear… those are always the very best accessories! I always recommend that my brides invest in professional hair and makeup, too.  It’s an extra expense, but the pros always know the best way to highlight your best features in a way that also allows the camera to see them.  For example, you should wear about 40% more makeup than you usually wear when you’re being photographed.  Otherwise, you can run the risk of looking pale or tired instead of fresh and happy!  In fact, you might want to even have a trial run on the day of the engagement session to test someone out! You won’t do the exact same makeup/hair that day, of course, but you’ll be able to see how that person works and you’ll have photographic evidence of their work soon afterward.

What sort of touch ups do you do?

You’ll never see images from us that haven’t already been checked for color, quality, and crop.  However, our first goal is to always take the image spot-on with the camera so that those touch-ups are minimal.  While we know how to use the software necessary to make sure you look beautiful, you won’t see any major special effects, vintage overlays, or over-plasticized, Barbie-smooth skin from us. You’ll see modern, timeless, and beautiful.  Natural, but refined. Classic and lovely.  About 25% of the final images we provide will be turned to black and white.  Then, we always double-check an image for any additional edits before it is enlarged for print or the final wedding album. If a couple requests further edits be made – like a distracting element removed from the background – we work with a highly specialized editing firm to ensure it is edited to our high expectations and the quality of the image remains completely intact.  I’m kind of a perfectionist, so you’ll find that we balance our clean, timeless editing style with turnaround times that are appropriate, realistic, and  always above and beyond.

What inspired you to become a photographer?

I grew up in a family that placed a high value on moments, as well as marriage. In fact, one of my grandmothers has always had a hallway showcasing multiple generations of the family’s lineage through wedding photos.  I have a copy of one of those images - my great-grandparents’ wedding day in 1926 - framed on my office desk to remind me of how important wedding day memories can be.  It’s a powerful thing to be inspired by love and lineage.  Being a photographer of both, I am always so humbled.  It’s a trust from my clients that I do not take lightly.

On average how many photos are taken during a wedding day?

Oh, I just love the wedding day! Since each couple’s day is different, the final image count varies – especially if it’s an extended wedding weekend or there are many unique details they have incorporated to tell their story!  From an average 8-hour wedding day, my wedding couples average around five hundred final digital images after we cull their day’s images to the best of the best.  It’s always been important for me to offer that service to my couples.  Since there are two of us – myself and an assistant – on the day, it’s important to curate the final images to include multiple perspectives and cut out any potential duplicates or photos where someone’s eyes are closed.  That’s still a lot of photos, but it won’t feel like you’re seeing the same thing over and over again.  It’ll be a fun recap of an incredible day!!!

Do you have back up equipment with you for the wedding?

Oh, heck yes! If I can help it, nothing is left to chance.  Insurance. Backup equipment. Stand-ins and my professional photography organization on call, in case of emergency.

How do I pick a good photographer with the many that there are available?

Let’s be real… there are A LOT OF US! If photography is a priority to you (and I’d imagine it is since it helps capture so many important moments as well as all the other stuff you’re spending your hard-earned cash on…and you’ve read this far into the blog post), you’ll want to make sure your photography investment is one you feel gets you the quality you want. It’s a fine balance. So, start with asking yourself whether or not it’s a priority.  If yes, then find a photographer who also makes YOU a priority.  You’ll want to connect with their personality, as you spend a lot of time with them leading up to and especially on your wedding day.  And, of course, you want to enjoy their style.  Make sure that the style is consistent by asking to see full wedding galleries or albums. Then, you’ll want to see what services they offer that fit your needs and tastes. In addition to that, their overall professionalism during meetings, phone and email conversations, as well as reviews from past clients will help give a peek into the experience you’ll have with them throughout the process.  An ideal wedding photographer will have a great deal of knowledge and experience with their equipment in addition to the flow of a wedding day.  It’s that ‘sixth sense’, so to speak, that allows us to capture beautiful, candid moments and make the split decisions with our camera to ensure those moments are captured correctly.  The photographer is one vendor you work with whose hire you do not want to regret.  It’s the investment that gives back for years and years! So, whether it’s me or another incredible photographer, I truly hope you have an ideal experience! You certainly deserve to have your wedding day moments captured in a beautiful way.

Should couples do a first look?

I always want to listen to a couple’s thoughts on this first and foremost.  Since I’m available to chat about your wedding timeline well in advance of the day, I can make suggestions on how to fit it all together with your preferences, while allowing you plenty of time for the moments.  However, if you’re unsure about whether or not you want to see each other, I really do recommend first looks because I have seen the many benefits of having one; particularly, a real the ease that the couple feels afterward, and the flow it allows in a wedding day’s schedule! I was married last year and loved how much extra time I got to spend with my husband on our wedding day because we had a first look.  Plus, our wedding schedule felt so much more natural and relaxed!  I still cried happy tears the entire way down the aisle and one of my favorite images is the way he looked at me when I did.  However, each couple sees their wedding day in a different and unique way - which is half the beauty of it! If you do nothing else, I would strongly recommend trusting your professional photographer and wedding coordinator/planner’s knowledge with regards to the schedule.  A well designed wedding schedule can make all the difference on your day, and we’ll ensure your preferences come first.

My Favorite Fashion Time of The Year

One of my favorite times of the year is the Award Shows ~ it allows me to look at all the fashion, hair, accessories and make-up on the red carpet.  Sunday was a "holiday" for me.  I sat down with a glass of wine, twitter and the television.  There are many ways that you can see the trends in fashion ~ a lot of black, a lot of color blocked dresses, and hair was mainly worn down looking very sleek. Below I have my top five dresses of the evening.  Critics may not agree, but I fell in love with each one of these!  Resse Witherspoon topped my list ~ LOVED the color of her dress!!

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Designer, Producer....What does it all mean?

wedding checklistIn meeting with the clients we have had inquire about our services lately the question has come up as to what do all these titles within the Wedding Planning Industry mean: Wedding Planner, Wedding Coordinator, Wedding Designer, Wedding Producer?  So I decided to explain at least the main three (3) in more detail for you.  There happens to be a lot of blurred lines across the titles with regard to responsibilities. Hopefully this will clarify for you the meaning of the different titles that you see:

1. Wedding Coordinator: usually plans the day of coordination for the wedding day.  The wedding coordinator can be hired well into the planning process.  You have already met and signed the contract with vendors ~ the wedding coordinator makes sure that those vendors show up and know exactly what to do.  A day of or month of coordinator makes sure that everything runs smoothly on that day.  They assist you with the set up of the ceremony and reception décor.

2. Wedding Planner: assists with the planning of the whole wedding.  This is what we do.  I attended a seminar several months ago where Calder Clark spoke and put it best, "The Wedding Planner is the architect."  The planner handles all the logistics from the vendors to the venue.  The wedding planner is the first person that you want to hire so that they can assist you with hiring your vendors and making sure that you have stayed within the budget that you create together.  They help to steer you in the direction of hiring professionals and making sure that you don't spend money where you aren't going to need to.

3. Wedding Designer/Producer: assists with the décor and design of your reception.  I like to think of this position similar to an interior designer for your home.  They come up with the theme and the colors that will be used throughout the day.  They design your décor from what flowers you will use to what the texture of the linens will on the reception tables.  They work closely with the planner to make sure that your vision is incorporated in all aspects of the décor.

Hope that explains a little better in detail the roles of individuals that you hire for your big day.  There are a few Wedding Planners our there that also do a great job of incorporating design into your day.  Make sure that you know what it is that you are looking for and that they provide that service.  When meeting with professionals ask for their credentials and referrals.  They should be happy to provide those to you.

Oliver and Michaeleen on a Summer Day | Real Wedding

Last year I was contacted by one of my dear high school friends to assist in the planning of her daughters wedding.   I was so excited to be asked to do this as I have such great memories of the brides mom and dad and our high school years.  The first time that I met with Micha she was so sweet and knew that this was going to be a wedding that I would love to plan.  The colors were hot pink and yellow and she wanted a whimsical feel. As you view the photos below by Brian Milo Photography, I hope that you can see just how fun and loving this family is.  The hard work that went into this day made everything flawless and enjoyable.  We had some rain but eventually the sun came out and allowed for a beautiful night.

Oliver and Micha are such a sweet couple and I enjoyed every minute of their wedding day!!!

The Picture Dilemma

 
 The Problem: It’s the middle of July. You have been waiting for 45 minutes and now you are finishing the last of the roasted chicken and green beans. You sit in a hot, crowded room with 130 other wedding guests waiting for one of your best friends and her husband to finally finish the pictures and walk through the door. While this scenario is annoying, it can be avoided.
 
The Plan: Many engaged couples are planning their pictures before the ceremony; this cuts down on the wait time after the ceremony ends. Your guests have come to spend this special day with you; don’t make them wait forever to congratulate you.
 
If you are planning on having a meal at your wedding, this is an option you might want to consider. You have spent so much time and money preparing for this special day. Take time and enjoy it!

~Traditional Vs. Modern~

Wedding Vows are a personal yet integral part of the wedding ceremony.  As you stare into the eyes of the person you love and promise to uphold them what do you want to say?

Many people think that the traditional route is the best because of the history.  While other people prefer to write their own personal vows.

There are advantages to both options…

Modern- You can say what comes to heart and personalize your message.  Many people write poems and/or make them into a song. Another way to look at it is you personalize every other detail of your wedding from the flowers to the cake why not your vows?

Traditional- Many couples think that every though these precious words have been said over and over there is a certain pledge that you promise one another.  A precedent set by all the wedding before and those to come after.

~Either way! Choose what feels right to you and make it special.

Creative Ways to Personalize Your Wedding

Because the push to be unique is increasing important to our brides, here are some of the more creative ideas we have seen.

  • If yours is a smaller wedding, consider including a personal not with the invitation.
  • With the help from the US Postal Service you can create your own stamp.

  • Stats have shown that social invitations are opened more frequently on Saturdays.  Time your invitation mailings to arrive on Saturday if possible.  You'll receive more RSVP responses.

  • Pick a monogram and use it throughout the planning process.

  • Choose a unique start time for the ceremony.  For example use the date you met (5:23) or the date you got engaged (7:04) or other key dates in your lives.
  • Take lots of photos during your engagement and pre-wedding planning period and use them as table decorations at the reception.
  • Create an entrance at the wedding ~ something that says WOW and let's your guests know they have arrived.

  • Include your parents by having their wedding photos on display at the reception.  Include grandparents photos too if they are available.
  • To keep everything moving, plan a "surprise" for guests at the reception every 30 minutes.

Aisle Style

Here are some tips for defining the aisle you will walk down at your wedding. If you are marrying in a church, be sure that the aisle cloth you've chosen is made of sturdy fabric and has weights to hold it down at both ends.  Do not use a paper runner.  They are difficult to walk on - especially in heels and they make noise.  Better to have a bare aisle.  Many florists now have colored aisle runners so you could follow a color plan although white or creme are still the favorite choices.  Some companies also do custom aisle runners to match your wedding invitations or have your monogram on them.

Remind the ushers who will be positioning the aisle cloth that this is part of the ceremony seating.  Their behavior and demeanor while rolling out the cloth and securing it is a significant part of the pre ceremony activities.  It needs to be done with dignity and care.

If your ceremony is taking place at a locations that does not have an aisle it is possible to create one.  Lanterns, potted plants, torches, flags or pennants, columns and stanchions with velvet ropes can add dramatic impact while defining your passageway.

Usually, tall decorative elements create a formal look while shorter items are appropriate for a more informal weddings.  Whatever aisle you have fashioned, walk down it with dignity.  This is not a 20 yard dash!  Take your escort's arm, stand up straight, head held high and walk toward the most important moment in your life.

Choosing the flowers for your wedding can be a big decision.  Picking the style, color and budget allocations can be daunting.  But if you spend some time thinking about what you want, the selections of these important wedding accessories can give you the WOW factor you want for your wedding. Selecting a florist is an important first step.  Ask for suggestions.  View florists whose work you like.  Ask to see photos from actual weddings they have done.

Think about how you will fund the flowers you want.  As you establish your wedding budget, think about the role you expect flowers to play.  We generally suggest a three part budget allocation.  Flowers for the reception are an important consideration since this is where guests will see flowers first hand.  We recommend the largest allocation here.

Secondly are flowers for the wedding party and immediate family.  Remember that bridal party bouquets are the most heavily photographed so don't cut too many corners there.  Having bridesmaids carry a single rose for example, can be economical, but remember that single buds tend to look strange in photographs with stems sticking out in several directions.  Bridesmaids tend to carry them awkwardly.

Third and finally, consider ceremony flowers.  The church or venue will likely give you guidelines as to what is allowed.  If the space is huge, consider filling it with greenery.

Nik and Meredith on a Fall Day | Real Wedding

Meredith and Nik are one of the sweetest couples that I know!  We had a lot of work to do but as you see it was well worth it.  They were my last wedding of the 2012 season and we did it right!  The sun was shining on a beautiful fall day.  The leaves were changing colors and love was in the air.  It was such a pleasure to work with them and their parents!  I want to share with you some of the pictures from that day.  It was very difficult to narrow down to a "few" favorites.  Please sit back, relax, and ENJOY!

Pantone Color of the Year for 2013 ~ EMERALD

Yesterday was always an exciting day for the event industry!  Pantone released the Color of the Year for 2013.  We will now see so many clients that want to use the EMERALD color as part of their wedding design.  I thought that I would show you some ways to incorporate the color EMERALD into your dream wedding.  Emerald Green was actually the color of my bridesmaids dresses 15 years ago. Favorite Movies for the Holiday Time

It is one of my favorite times of the year!  I love to sit and watch the holiday movies that are on during the season.  Now this post has nothing to do with weddings or events but has everything to do with spending time with your family!  So..... with that said, make the popcorn and hot chocolate and sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the movies that I call "favorites"!!

Developing THE PLAN

No matter how long your engagement may be, there are several key decisions that you must make early on in the planning process.  This list is in a suggested order but you and your family will need to decide which gets done first and why.

  1. Work out your budget.  Determine how much you want to spend and the source(s) for the funds.
  2.  Consider hiring Accent on Events to help save you time, stress and money.
  3.  Decide on the type of wedding that you want.
  4.  Book your dates and venues for the ceremony and reception.  If they are to be in separate places try to minimize the  travel time between them.
  5. Research, decide on and book photographers, florist, entertainment and caterer if needed.
  6. Find your DREAM dress.
  7. Think about the size of your wedding party and select members.
  8. If you will have out of town guests, book a block of rooms.  We suggest selecting two or three sites with varying price options from which guests can choose.
  9. Register for gifts.  Sign up at a minimum of three retail locations ~ again try for a range of price points.
